Selon un représentant de Disney, c'est le Mickey de STEAMBOAT WILLIE et le court-métrage de 1928 qui arriveront dans le domaine public cette année, tandis que ses représentations plus modernes seront encore protégées :
"“Ever since Mickey Mouse’s first appearance in the 1928 short film Steamboat Willie, people have associated the character with Disney’s stories, experiences, and authentic products,” a Disney spokesperson said in a statement to the Associated Press. “That will not change when the copyright in the Steamboat Willie film expires.”
Current artists and creators will be able to make use of Mickey, but with major limits. It is only the more mischievous, rat-like, non-speaking boat captain in Steamboat Willie that has become public.
“More modern versions of Mickey will remain unaffected by the expiration of the Steamboat Willie copyright, and Mickey will continue to play a leading role as a global ambassador for the Walt Disney Company in our storytelling, theme park attractions, and merchandise,”
Malgré tout, on peut s'attendre à ce que de nombreux produits dérivés facile à fabriquer (tee-shirts, posters, etc) et déclinaisons animées parodiques avec ce Mickey de 1928 apparaissent cette année, en tout légalité. Et forcément, au fil des ans, les autres looks de Mickey subiront le même sort, et ce sera pareil pour Donald, Minnie, Pluto, Goofy et le reste des personnages iconiques de Disney.
